A vintage movie poster of ''Greed'', a 1925 American silent film directed by Erich von Stroheim. It is considered one of the most significant and controversial films in the history of silent cinema. The film is known for its ambitious storytelling, meticulous attention to detail, and its impact on both the industry and the career of its director.
The story of "Greed" is based on the 1899 novel "McTeague" by Frank Norris and revolves around the lives of three characters in San Francisco: John McTeague (played by Gibson Gowland), a dentist; Trina Sieppe (played by ZaSu Pitts), his wife; and Marcus Schouler (played by Jean Hersholt), McTeague's friend. The film traces the characters' relationships, their descent into greed, and the tragic consequences that follow.
